MEET THE FACULTY OF LAW “JUSTINIAN THE FIRST” IN SKOPJE

The Iustinianus Primus Faculty of Law is the oldest higher education institution in the Republic of North Macedonia in the field of legal, political and communication sciences. It was established by Decree of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia on November 3, 1951 as a department of the Faculty of Law and Economics of the University of Skopje, and since July 1, 1956 it has been operating as the first independent higher education institution in the field of legal sciences. In 2001, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary, the Faculty of Law was renamed the Iustinianus Primus Faculty of Law-Skopje (Facultas Iuridica lustinianus Primus) by the decision of the Faculty Council. In 2025, the Faculty of Law celebrated the 74th anniversary.

Faculty Day is November 3, the day when the Faculty of Law and Economics was established by the Decree passed by the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. At the Faculty of Law, December 10 is traditionally celebrated as International Human Rights Day.

Since the establishment of the Faculty until today, a total of 49,926 students have enrolled in law studies. A total of 272 students have enrolled in the dispersed law studies in Štip, while 307 students have enrolled in the dispersed law studies in Veles. 3,134 students have enrolled in journalism studies, and a total of 2,915 students have enrolled in political studies.

Since the academic year 2013/2014, 53 students have enrolled in the newly established undergraduate programme in Political Science taught in English, while 116 students have enrolled in the programme accredited in the 2018/2019 academic year. Since the academic year 2013/2014, 194 students have enrolled in the newly established Public Relations studies, while 189 students have enrolled in the programme accredited in 2018/2019.

At the Faculty of Law “Iustinianus Primus”, as of 8 January 2026, a total of 619 candidates have successfully completed postgraduate studies and obtained the academic degree of Master of Science, while 252 candidates have obtained the academic degree of Doctor of Science.

In the second cycle (Master’s studies), since the 2008/2009 academic year, a total of 6,200 students have enrolled in Law studies, 470 students in Political Studies, 154 students in Journalism studies, and 115 students in Public Relations studies. From the 2023/2024 academic year, a new study programme in Media and Public Relations has been accredited, with 19 students enrolled. To date, a total of 4,833 students have successfully completed the second cycle of studies (Master’s studies), of whom 4,195 in Law studies, 160 in Political Studies, 74 in Journalism studies, and 24 in Public Relations studies.

247 students of legal sciences, 37 students of political sciences and 11 students of communication sciences are enrolled in the third cycle (doctoral studies) from the academic year 2011/2012.

Lectures are provided by 69 teachers and 2 assistants employed at the Faculty, as well as teachers from other faculties and institutes of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje and distinguished experts and practitioners. Master’s students have the opportunity to attend practical teaching outside the faculty in state bodies, courts, civil society organizations, media and other institutions.
